Detroit Frankie’s Wood Fired Brick Oven

Frankie's Wood Fired PizzaSometimes I’m a jerk with preconceived notions. And sometimes I miss out on some really good things because of it. This time, I missed out on a lot of really, really good pizza. I’d drive by Detroit Frankie’s Wood Fired Brick Oven, in the parking lot on Oakland and Cedar, on my way home from work every night and in spite of my curiosity, I would keep driving because I thought buying food from someone preparing it in a parking lot was too sketchy. Thankfully, my partner and I decided to give it a try when we didn’t want to wait in line for lunch at another restaurant.

pizzaBoy, were my worries unfounded. The set-up was as clean as any kitchen and you get to watch your pizza being prepared in front of you. It gets popped in a wood fire and a few minutes later you have a delicious lunch or dinner. I had no idea wood-fired pizza was so good! They have a dozen different topping combinations, but I have yet to order anything but the #9: creamy garlic sauce, Italian sausage, onions, fresh tomatoes, and feta. I’ve had it three times in the past couple weeks.

A 16″ pizza is $15, or you can grab a quick lunch for just $5 — a quarter of a ready-made pizza and a bottle of water. You can find them open from 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Do yourself a favor and don’t be scared away by the old fast-food restaurant parking lot.
